How It Started

In February, we got a couple of coupons in the mail from a local nursery. We thought it would be a good outing for us and the kids. The plan was: eat lunch at a place we like close to the nursery, and then get some sun and maybe some flowers for the back yard. We ended up with a few starts of lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. And I didn’t know it but it ended up being the start of a hobby that has become very important to me.

That’s a blueberry plant we ended up not getting after hearing about some of the care guidelines. We knew it was too far beyond our expertise at the time. In fact, we knew next to nothing about how to grow plants, as evidenced by how we planted in this cart:

I can see now that the soil we used was very woody. Also, I crowded the tomato plants. These could have been planted in the ground (and later were) or in containers.
