Quick Notes and More Photos + Amazing Blue Flowers

Recent days and today:

  • Grow bag soil from dead plants solarized, sifted, amended
  • Amendments for use in strawberry patches included small amount of pumice, sifted compost, vermiculite
  • Added to strawberry patches, lightly mixed in, gently watered
  • Harvest some carrots, daikon radishes, tomatoes
  • Began cleaning out and preparing south planter

Progress:

  • Seedlings growing well – tomatoes, basil, parsley, broccoli, etc on track
  • Jalapenos, Serrano, Bell Peppers predicted to sprout soon
  • Restarted Desert Willow after 30 days, this will be the third try
  • Changes this round: surface sowing only, aiming for maximum oxygen, less moisture, inside under grow light the heat mat set to 75 instead of 80
  • Also started a 4-cell tray outside
  • The compost pile is progressing nicely
  • Pictured above, the Avocado plant is taking to its new pot well.
  • Some of the flowers on the South side of the house are really beautiful.
  • The carrots I’ve harvested recently were smaller than I’d hope and they tasted pretty earthy. I have some ideas about what to improve in terms of water, soil, and timing.
  • Grasshopper.
  • Onions in the West planter seem to be doing great.
  • The bottom of the Lemon tree shows obviously root restriction and it will be potted up soon.
  • Marglobe tomatoes reddening up in February in Southern California. Good times. These taste pretty ok but I’m really excited about the Sungolds that should be ready to transplant outside in a couple of months.
